Shower tray sizes: how to pick one that fits a real bathroom

← All guides

Tray catalogues talk in millimetres. Your bathroom talks in door swings and where the toilet has to stay. The right tray is the largest one that still lets you stand, dry and leave the room without climbing over the pan.

Sizes, in plain English

  • —760–800mm square: only for a genuinely tiny room, and it will feel compact
  • —900mm square: a common compromise in a terrace
  • —1000–1200mm: comfortable if the length exists
  • —Rectangular walk-in: often the best use of a short wall
  • —Quadrant: saves the corner, costs you elbow room

Waste position decides more than the brochure

A tray with the waste in the wrong corner means extra pipework and sometimes a step you did not want. We set the waste from the joist direction and the stack, then choose the tray. Not the other way round.

FAQ

Quick answers

What is a comfortable shower tray size?+

For one person, we like a clear standing space that is not narrower than about 800mm, and longer if the room allows. Corner and quadrant trays save floor area but feel smaller in use.

Can a tray go over floorboards?+

Yes, on a sound, levelled floor with the right waste. A rocking floor becomes a cracked silicone joint. We check the floor on the survey.

Do you include a tray in the package?+

A standard white tray is included in shower layouts. Textured, coloured and wet-room floors are priced as the upgrades they are.
