Shower niches: storage that does not end up on the floor
Every shower we strip out has a crusted wire basket and a bottle on the floor. A niche is the civilised version: a shelf in the wall, at the height of your hand, falling back towards the tray so water leaves.
Size it for bottles, not for a photograph
A shallow slot looks neat and holds nothing you own. We size the opening for a normal bottle, and we do not put it where your elbow lands when you turn around. One well-placed niche beats three decorative ones.
Waterproof the box
On a tiled wall the niche is tanked. On a panelled wall it is formed so the joints do the same job. A light, if you want one, is specified for a wet zone. It is a small piece of building work, which is why it appears as its own line when it is an extra.

Quick answers
Can you put a niche in any wall?+
Only if the wall has depth, or we build the depth. A solid brick wall and a stud wall are different jobs. A niche cut into a pipe run is not a niche.
Do niches leak?+
They leak when the shelf falls the wrong way or the waterproofing stops at the opening. A niche is a tiny wet room. It is detailed like one.
Are lit niches included?+
A niche can be part of the design and some are priced upgrades, including lit ones. The quote names them rather than “storage” in the abstract.
