Electric underfloor heating in a bathroom: where it helps

← All guides

East Lancashire bathrooms are cold because the houses are cold. Underfloor heating does not fix the walls. It does stop you regretting the floor at seven in the morning, which is most of why people ask for it.

Electric mats

Loose cable or a mat under the floor finish, on a dedicated circuit, with a thermostat that understands a bathroom. It suits refits because there is no new pipework back to the boiler. The floor build-up has to have room for it. A shower former and a heating mat both want to occupy the same few millimetres, so they are designed together.

What it will not do

It will not dry a leaking tray, and it will not replace ventilation. Switch it on a little before you need the room; it is gentle heat, not a fan heater.

FAQ

Quick answers

Can underfloor heating go in a wet room?+

Yes, when it is specified for that build-up and it is above the waterproofing or within a system designed for it. It is planned before the floor is closed, not clipped in afterwards.

Will it heat the whole room?+

In a small well-insulated bathroom it might. In a cold stone terrace it is usually a comfort layer alongside a towel rail, not the only heat source.

Is it too late once the tiles are down?+

Yes. That is why it is a survey conversation, not a “while you’re here” on the last day.
